Which Tales Series Should You Start With? Part 1
The Tales series is a massive, sundry series, and where the first game you play of it can really
affect how you see the rest of the franchise as a whole.
If you ever wondered what the unsung hero of the JRPG genre was, look no further than the
Tales series. Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest holds success over the Tales series, putting into the
B level category. However, it is truly one of the most successful JRPG franchises that you might
not know about, flooding the market with a new game every other year. It’s only somewhat
underneath the notice of the average Western gamer, but in Japan, the series is a huge deal.
With methodological fineness, very well polished mechanics, and reverberating characters that,
on the whole, make up many of the genre’s traits; it’s a franchise absolutely worth the time. It is
a series that first stepped on the Super Famicom and hasn’t stopped since, but it can be hard to tell
which game you should play. There are so many, from Eternia to Graces F, and more. It doesn’t
help that the game series has transitioned to a sequel system, where games come out in plot pairs.
The series publisher Bandai-Namco is also investing a lot more in cross-media promotion. There
are older games that also connect in various places, which makes it even harder to tell which one
to start with.
The Tales franchise is rising higher and higher, but what makes this series special, and where
should interested new fans start? Find out Thursday in Part 2.
